Since that time, funding through the State of Texas and National Institute of Justice has allowed UNTCHI to assist in thousands of missing persons investigations across the country. This bill allowed the establishment of a missing persons DNA database at The University of North Texas Health Science Center, within the Center for Human Identification (UNTCHI). The Missing Persons program began in 2002 as a result of the passage of Texas Senate Bill 1304. The UNTCHI Missing Persons Unit provides DNA testing of biological evidence related to the identification of missing and unknown persons as well as mitochondrial DNA testing of hair evidence related to Texas criminal investigations.
